first track day done this year. (Croft)

As I mentioned previously (I think) my dad wasnt riding but offered me to take his 675 street triple R out so I can see what riding a flat bar bike on track is like.

I took it out for the first 2 sessions, my thoughts were as follows:

Instantly comfortable.
as the pace increased however, still not the same as riding a flat barred bike on the road.
body positioning and anchoring myself to the bike took some getting used to.
lack of fairing really hits home at 130mph!

2nd session out I got behind a brand new 765 street triple RS, he passed me on the second corner of the opening lap (rude), and I spent the rest of the session chasing him down. his bike had the legs on mine on the straights and I had to work pretty hard to close him back down. I eventually got on the back of him but I struggled to make an overtake as he was just that little bit faster on the straights for me to get into a position to outbrake him, and he was too fast to just ride round the outside of. After about 6 laps I eventually managed to get him by backing off just the right amount through sunny in to leave a bit of a gap, so I could go full gas through sunny out and get a run on him, and use the extra speed to outbrake and block pass him into the complex. Job done and masterful overtake complete, 2 corners later someone chucked it into the scenery and the session was red flagged. Its not a competition but I clearly won there  :icon_cheers:

3rd session I decided to get back onto the trx.  this was weird - I expected to be struggling with the extreme ergonomics and really stiff setup, but it felt like putting a set of old boots back on. everything just worked, and i was instantly faster. I never saw 765 rs man again that day but had I seen him I am pretty confident I would have marmalised him. I was about 4 seconds a lap quicker.
one of the big differences between the 675 rs and the trx was the power delivery. One of the problems I was having with the 675 was that if I let the revs drop below 7000 I just had no drive out of the corners and I was losing out big time.  The hairpin at croft is super tight, and in second gear I was down to 4500rpm in 2nd gear. I never use first as its horrible but it meant I was losing out all the way down the main straight as all the other bikes jumped out the corners.  it really is a 1st gear corner for that bike, and the bike has +3 teeth on the rear sprocket also.

The MT09 motor in the trx has mid range punch by the bucket load. 2nd gear round the hairpin, I open the throttle and it launches me toward the horizon, its got the low to mid range of a big litre bike. It loses out the 1000cc bikes at the top end, but by this time we are 3/4 of the way down the straight and they are working hard to get past then jam the brakes on.

So I wont be changing my bike riding position, its just too good.
The TRX is not without its faults however. the main one I need to sort is engine braking and wheel hop when shifting down gears. Its got the correct amount of engine braking, but if I shift down whilst braking really hard with no weight on the back wheel it hops really really hard which shakes the entire bike. It only does it on the really big braking zones like the run into tower and from the gooseneck down to mansfield at cadwell, but when it does it feels quite nasty.   I can get round it by doing all my braking and shift down at the last second before tipping in, but its not ideal.

I am looking at purchasing the parts from the XSR900 clutch to convert mine into the yamaha stock 'slip and assist' clutch. That should solve that problem.

The only other problem I have with the bike is that the radiator is a bit small. the fan always comes on by the time I am reentering the pits. I have it set to come on at 95 degrees, which is lower than stock, but I always see 96 to 98 degrees on dash. its an ideal temperature for the bike to run at, but I think the radiator is working at 100 percent duty cycle with no margin for error.  I need something bigger I think. Probably a custom one.

This has renewed my enthusiasm for the bike and track days, it was brilliant fun!

Before the Strumpet a mate was talking me into an RC8 but then I sobered up and seriously looked at a Super Duke but I could just not get the styling.

Lolz - been there and worn the t-shirt out. The number of times I’ve driven myself to despair only to find something simple is at fault. Great news to hear the thing is sorted and running well

Misfire sorted.  I'm mucking about with maps and stuff and it turns out the bike needed new plugs and leads  :hmm

Seems they must have been about knackered and when I've stripped the bike down, disturbed them and finished them off.  That's the 2nd time a mundane failure has had me scratching my head after I have made some significant modifications.   Last year i crashdd my track bike which had me doubting the entire track bike build - turned out to be a knackered old tyre...

Good news though, the bike is an absolute missile.

I don’t think that anyone actually got around to setting one up Gaz... unless I’ve been left out too!
Al, we should set up an "I've been left out of the CMC WhatsApp Group" WhatsApp Group.

WhatsApp group would be good, especially for ride outs, but could be a pain being pestered by notifications all day of squirrel porn.
